Another member of Russia’s paid influencers program arrested in the US

While it seems that Russians are progressively purchasing every corner of the American political landscape, the US Justice Department took one off the streets today, charging Russian national Nomma Zarubina with acting as an agent for Russian intelligence services. Known for her “expertise” in decolonization, Zarubina allegedly collaborated with the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) to influence U.S.-based experts and officials.

According to the indictment, Zarubina was recruited in 2020 by an FSB agent codenamed “Alice.” Her mission involved establishing a network of contacts within the United States, targeting journalists, military personnel, think tank researchers, and university professors specializing in Russian affairs. The objective was to advance pro-Russian narratives. To this end, Zarubina participated in discussion panels and activist seminars across Europe and the U.S.

The indictment also indicates that Zarubina received assistance from Elena Brenson, head of the Coordination Council of Russian Compatriots in the U.S. Brenson is currently facing charges related to illegal activities and connections to the Russian government.

Russian opposition politician Leonid Volkov recalled encountering Zarubina at a meeting with supporters in Washington in January 2023. He noted that she arrived early, secured a prominent seat, but appeared disinterested during the discussion. However, she approached him for a photograph immediately after the meeting concluded.

Following her arrest, Zarubina was released on a $25,000 bail with travel restrictions limiting her movement outside New York. In social media posts, she denied evading the investigation and cautioned against relying on “post-truth.” If convicted, Zarubina faces up to five years in prison.

This case emerges amid heightened concerns over Russian espionage activities in Europe and the U.S. European intelligence agencies have warned of Russia preparing acts of sabotage, including spying, explosions, arson, and infrastructure damage. Recent arrests in Germany related to potential attacks and reports of GPS interference in Finland, Poland, and the Baltic states underscore the growing threat of Russian destabilization efforts.

The FBI’s charges against Zarubina highlight the ongoing challenges the U.S. faces in countering foreign influence operations.
