Kyiv and Odesa Hit in Major Overnight Attack as Russia Intensifies Aerial Campaign

In today’s early hours, Russia launched one of its largest combined drone and missile attacks against Ukraine in recent months, striking multiple districts of Kyiv and targeting medical facilities in Odesa. Preliminary information is 5 dead and 25 injured. In total, the Russians used 315 drones and 7 missiles, including 2 ballistic missiles of North Korean manufacture.

The assault caused explosions across the capital, caused fires, and resulted in civilian casualties.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia deployed a mix of cruise and ballistic missiles alongside dozens of Shahed-type drones. Air defense systems were active across the country, but debris from intercepted weapons—as well as several direct hits—led to widespread damage in residential areas.

In Kyiv, explosions were recorded in seven of the city’s ten districts: Desnyanskyi, Obolonskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Solomianskyi, Podilskyi, Darnytskyi, and Holosiivskyi. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that multiple fires broke out overnight, including in residential buildings and on rooftops. In Obolonskyi, debris damaged a school; in Shevchenkivskyi, a residential building caught fire; and in Podilskyi and Darnytskyi, drone fragments set structures ablaze.

At least 7 civilians were injured in Kyiv, according to emergency services. The full extent of casualties remains unclear as rescue efforts continue.

In Odesa, local authorities confirmed that a maternity hospital and an emergency medical facility were struck. Two people were killed and nine injured, including medical personnel and patients. Although no newborns were harmed, the strikes on healthcare infrastructure are likely to raise further concern among international observers. Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry condemned the targeting of protected medical sites, calling it a violation of international humanitarian law.

The air raid alert lasted several hours across central and southern Ukraine. Videos shared on social media showed flashes in the sky from air defense systems and the sounds of multiple explosions throughout the night. Kyiv residents reported being woken by the sound of incoming drones and intercepts.

In the hours following the attacks, Russian state-affiliated Telegram channels claimed that only military targets had been struck, citing the “low” number of civilian deaths. Ukrainian officials disputed that narrative, pointing to dozens of examples of devastating damage across civilian neighborhoods and the destruction of a former foreign consular building in the capital.

“This was a coordinated strike across civilian infrastructure,” said Serhiy Popko, head of Kyiv’s military administration. “The attacks had no military justification.”

The June 10 assault follows a broader trend of intensified Russian strikes in recent weeks, many involving large-scale drone swarms aimed at overwhelming Ukraine’s air defenses. Analysts note that the frequency and scale of these attacks appear designed to exhaust defensive stockpiles and pressure Ukrainian cities ahead of the NATO summit in Washington next month.

As of Monday morning, emergency services remained at several impact sites across Kyiv and Odesa. Authorities have urged residents to remain in shelters during air raid alerts and to avoid sharing images of air defense activity or impact locations on social media.
