Since 1993, Russia has been militarily occupying a long stretch of Moldovan land, maintaining what is essentially a large military base with an incidental local population of around 500,000, right on the border of Ukraine. With Russian pipeline gas acting as the main conduit of survival, the self-proclaimed republic of Transnistria is now confronting a severe energy crisis following the cessation of supplies on January 1, 2025. The region’s primary power source, the Cuciurgan power station, has transitioned to coal to maintain electricity generation. However, officials warn that in addition to having less than two weeks of gas reserves remaining, coal reserves are also projected to last only until the end of January, adding urgency to the already calamitous situation.
The abrupt halt in gas deliveries has led to widespread heating and hot water outages, affecting tens of thousands of households. Approximately 75,000 homes have been completely disconnected from gas supplies, while an additional 116,000 are experiencing reduced service.
In response to the crisis, Russia’s puppet “authorities” have begun implemented rolling blackouts and are urging residents to conserve energy. Public facilities, including schools and factories, have been closed to reduce consumption. Emergency measures, such as distributing free firewood and setting up field kitchens, are in place to support the population during freezing temperatures.
The situation has prompted concerns of a humanitarian crisis, with Moldovan officials accusing Russia of leveraging energy supplies to exert political pressure. Moldova’s Prime Minister, Dorin Recean, stated that the Kremlin’s actions aim to destabilize the pro-European government in Chișinău.
Efforts are underway to secure alternative energy sources. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Moldovan President Maia Sandu have discussed the possibility of Ukraine supplying coal to alleviate the shortages in Transnistria.
After the fall of Syria, Russia’s puppet colonies and range of dictators around the world are likely beginning to see the writing on the wall.
